Blended/personalized learning is "a formal education program in which a student learns at least in part through online delivery of content and instruction with some element of student control over time, place, path, and/or pace and at least in part at a supervised brick-and- mortar location away from home." Los Robles-Ronald McNair Academy is taking bold steps to create a student-centric personalized education system that fosters lifelong learning. Through weaving digital learning in the learning process, students and teachers will have access to better data that improves learning and teaching.
Simply, blended learning is a process and a tool that great teachers in great schools use to get even better academic results through near real-time data on our students' learning progress.
Data just by itself has limitations. However, there's a data bottleneck in traditional classrooms as teacher have access to more data than ever about their student's knowledge if their assessment systems are dialed in. Once teachers know in detail where gaps are in student's learning, it’s still a challenge to provide a just-in- time intervention to help them overcome the gaps.
Blended/personalized learning will help address this bottleneck in a scalable approach. Further, students will learn how to leverage the expertise of our teachers to help create context from the content.
Our teachers will be the first ones to share that they don't know everything. Today, content (information/data) is readily available online and our teachers use their expertise in putting content into context (meaning) to deepen our students' learning. Our teachers act as the "guide on the side" (rather than the "sage on the stage") and as a coach to help our students make positive steps in their learning journey.
One distinct advantage of blended/personalized learning is that our schools with blended/personalized learning have seen their discipline issues all but disappear. Student engagement is up and student attitude towards learning has improved.
